I turned the key today and got a clicking sound. Crawled under the truck and tapped on the starter solenoid with a wrench and it started right up. Is this just the solenoid on the starter?
Either or. You could have burned spots on the solenoid and/or you could have a flat spot on the starter commentater. First off I would make sure that the connections at the starter are clean and secure. If that doesn't do it I would pull the starter and have it checked.
As a suggestion if you have to replace the starter check into the Super Duty one for the 7.3, have one on my '96 and it spins and fires up alot quicker...
Its probably starter. If you can get you hands on one Replace the starter with a nippendso starter,I have been replacing my customers older style delco and the mitsubishi starters with them for a long time and they all swear by them.
The nippendso is the same starter as the one on a case backhoe.

Thanks. Can you get me a part number? Are they pricey?
99whiteford's suggestion is a great one too as my understanding the Nippendso is much better than others, and in a SD version would be the ticket.....
Here in Western Canada, was quoted $370.00 with a $140.00 exchange for reman Delco two year Replacement Guarantee. Have been through 2 Bosche remans in the last 16 months and my supplier replace the last Bosche with the for noted Delco including the warrenty for free.....
If I was to do it over would look into the SD nippendso...the SD only have two bolts to hold them on too.....!
