I was always told there are no stupid questions just stupid people, but here's my question to prove my stupidity. I have a 1979 f250 with a 460, it has started blowing smoke out the tail pipe, my questions is. Does this mean my rings are bad or is it i need the heads rebuilt? Some clarification for a moron would be helpful.
Does it smoke all the time or just after idling for a while then you rev it up does it smoke?
The latter is usually from worn out decrepid Valve seals.
How much blow-by do you have ?
Pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover and see how much smoke is coming out of the hole.
This smoke usually means the rings are bad.

It just smokes after idling for a while. There isn't any smoke coming from the pcv either. If it is just worn valve seal can new heads fix the problem. the truck has good power it just smokes at times.
I assumed it was Blue smoke.
If it is , You can just replace the valve seals.
There is a device that hooks up to an airhose(if you have a compressor) that pressurizes the combustion
chamber while you take the valve springs/keepers off and slip the new valve seal on.
With putting the crankshaft in 3 different positions
you can do all 16 valves with minimum turning.
There is another way using rope stuffed in the cylinder too.
* NOTE :
Putting rebuilt heads on a motor with lots of wear can only cause you to take the whole thing apart again because you have now strengthened the top and weaked the bottom end.
Just replace the valve seals and let the whole motor wear evenly.
