The early 460s(365bhp versions),had 10.5:1 compression ratio up to 1971.In 1972,the compression ratio dropped to 8:1.Most 460s are 8:1,but when EFI was added in mid-'87 truck engines the ratio went up to 8.5:1.
thanks diGideo, I have a chance to buy a 69 460 from a lincoln for $350. is this a good buy? this engine runs good, smokes on start up and under acceleration.
Yes,it sounds like a good buy.The 1969-1971 460(10.5:1 compression,365bhp,500lbs./ft. of torque) is considered the best 460 to use.Truthfully, any 460 can be built into a powerhouse,it just takes careful planning, and the right combination of parts.Good luck with your 460 swap.
Don't know the exact horsepower&torque specs for the 1979 version of the 460,but the compression ratio should be 8:1.Horsepower for the '78 460 found in the Lincoln(s) was 210 net@4,200rpm&torque rating was 357 lbs./ft.@2,600rpm. The 460 was only available in trucks/vans in 1979&later years.I would say the '79 460s had about 220 net horsepower& a torque rating higher than the '78 460s.You should be able to find out exact numbers by looking in a 1979 Ford service manual for the light-duty trucks.
460's have been put into trucks since 1973... I have a all original 1973 F350 Ranger Super Camper Special with a 460 and C6... They were available after 1/73 as a special order option and were a standard option in the 1974 and up models...My dad has a '74 Ranger with a factory 460...
I realize that the 460 was put into trucks since '73,BUT after '78('79&later) they were only put into trucks&vans.Sorry if I said it wrong. The 1978 model year was the last year for 460s to be put into cars.
