The guy never saw my truck... He took my original key, placed it into some sort of reader connected to a PC. The reader uploaded some info from my key, and did some search. He then took out my key, and placed in the new key with a chip... the original chip he had in there didn't work, so he placed a different chip in and then it was coded. He then took the coded key over to the cutting machine, and voila, new key. I mean I guess he could've kept some info, but he'd have to know something about me to find it... I paid in cash, he never saw my truck, and let's face it, any locksmith can get into anything they want anyway.
I had the same issue with only having one key. I went to my local dealer and it was about $70 and 30 minutes to have a 2nd key made and programmed. Then I ordered a blank online for about $15 and cut/programmed that one myself. With the PATS keys you should always have 3 working so if you lose one you still have 2 available for programming.
any time i have programmed a new pats key i have only used 1 key the hold it next to the one i am programming i have never had to use 2 keys to program one and i have had several cut for my 2 trucks and programmed them myself

I could be wrong, but I think the two key requirement started in 2004.
Is there any way to get the key with the blue emblem vs the solid black rubber? I cant find them, the local dealer said I would have to buy the "badge" seperate....
The key with the emblem on it is a ford key, most parts dept's won't carry the ford keys, there too expensive. The aftermarket pats keys are like half the price. The only time I saw actual ford key blanks was when a ne style came out and you could not get the a/m keys yet. You're local dealer CAN get you a ford key but you may have to buy 25 of them. Phil
IF you go to a local lock smith, good chance they could do it for less than the dealer will.
I was thinking of making a spare key(I already have two), and it would of cost $100 to make one if I only had one key, but since I had two it would be $45 from the lock smith. Still to expensive, so never mind.
A regular old key will open the door and work in the ignition(acc., on position), but it won't start it.

If you have your original two keys, you can get a blank key from ebay and have it cut at walmart or a hardware store and then program it your self using your two original keys. Look in your owners manual on how to program.
ebay: $12 for 1 key
Dealer: $40 to program ($80/hour labor, 30 minutes labor charge)
Dealer cut key for free and programmed the 2nd key.
I then bought 2 other keys from eBay seller. cut them at Wally World for $1 each. programmed them myself using the method posted above.
btw, I think the trucks PCM can only remember 8 keys at a time. you have to program each key at that time. if you are missing any at the time of programming, the PCM will lose the code to that key
