We have a 2002 Expedition we bought a couple months ago and the dealer only gave us one key. It's worked out fine only having the one key but with young kids we worry about the key getting locked inside. I went to get a key today and found out that you need to get the "special key" from Ford. My ford dealer was happy to sell me a key at 20 bucks but I'd have to make an appt with service to get it programmed to the vehicle. Before I drop another 40 bucks I was wondering if this is something I can do. I'll pay the dealer but not if it's one of those "turn the key on, pump the gas 3 times and touch your nose" type of Programming tasks. Any help is greatly appreciated
nope to get it done with one key it has to be programed. Some lock smiths can do it. My 2003 was done by a locksmith. if you had 2 keys yo could do it yourself.

The Ford parts guy asked me how many keys I have also. How would it be done with 2 keys?
If you have two keys: Insert key 1, turn to 'on' (not start) position. Wait until 'Theft' light goes out. Remove key 1, insert key 2; same deal. Remove key 2 insert 3rd (or subsequent) turn to 'on' position (not start). The PCM will know recognize this key as 'valid'. Once the theft light goes out, you can now turn key 3 (n) to the start position and start the vehicle.
I have a 98 EB Expedition which I brought in 2003 with 60K miles on it. It also had only one key. I brought the 2nd key($20.00, they wanted $60.00 to program the key) and came to this site and found a thread here with a link to the ford site which walked you though the steps. It took me a whole 4 minutes to do the job.
Once again I only did it with one key and the one I brought from ford.

It sucks they charge so much just to program it. My dealer charged me 50.00 for the key and progamming. What bothers me is that another ford dealer in a neighboring town charges 99.00 to do the exact same thing. Another dealer said it would be 75.00 total. Don't understand how they can vary so much in pricing. Good luck and hope you find that link.
ok, also found a link that says all 97 to early 98 models you only need one key to program another key, But you will need two keys to program one key on later 98's and up. Here is the link to this post. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...t=Ignition+Key
Here is the link to the other post that walks you though it if you have 2 keys already and are programing a 3rd. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...t=Ignition+Key
Sorry for the getting your hope's up on this one.
I bought my replacement PAT keys on Ebay, two for 16.98 including shipping. I went to WalMart to have them cut them, surprise, they did not charge me to cut them. After going to my house to retrieve my wife's key, I programmed both keys in less than two minutes. Sure was cheaper this way than having the dealership do it. I got quotes of $80, $95, and $120 for a replacement key. I did get a second key done at a local locksmith for $54. You can bet that I will keep a spare around at all times.
If you want a great place to hide a key. This is a cool accessory to add to any truck. We have a new patented product called the Hitch Safe Key Vault that fits into most 2 inch receiver hitches. This allows you to store a spare key inside the receiver hitch that can only be accessed using your own personal 4 digit code. You will never be locked out of your truck again. We have complete videos on our web site showing how it works and how to set the combination. We currently have a promotion on our site giving one away for free. All you need to do is visit our site and register to be qualified for the give away.
when I bought my 99 ranger they only gave me one key. Dealer said they couldn't do anything about it.
I hadn't signed papers yet and told them if they wanted me to sign they would come up with 2nd key. It sure is suprizing what they will do to get papers signed.
That was to close So when I got My Expd I knew the game. those keys arnt cheap
My wife actually locked our daughter in our '97 Expedition a few months ago. OOPS! The Police came & unlocked the door. Luckily, the temp's were in the 60's when it happened, so no harm was done.
We only have one ignition key, but after the above incident, I went to Wal-Mart & had them cut me two plain jane keys to match the ignition key. These keys won't start the Expy; they are to unlock the doors only. They work like a charm.
Hi all. I like to be prepared so when I had my 02 Explorer I had a 3rd key made at the dealer (around $30.) and programed it myself. With the keyless entry buttons I hid it inside the vehicle so if I ever lost my keys on vacation or something like that, I wouldn't be left stranded. I also had a fourth key made to put in the transponder box for the remote start.
When I traded the Explorer for my used 2004 Expedition, after a tough negotiation I told the salesman I needed 4 keys. He quickly responded asking me if I knew how much those keys cost, and I said yes, and that is why I wanted them. He agreed to give me a total of 3 keys, so I decided to not be greedy.
I still had another one made for the new remote start and I have key #3 hidden inside the vehicle. If you have the keyless entry and don't memorize the numbers to use it you are not taking advantage of a nice safety feature. No need to hide a key on the exterior of the vehicle and the code you memorize is more useful.
