I have only 1 key for my 2000 F-150 4x4. The key has a chip so where can I go to get a key made that isn't going to cost me too much? One dealer charges $78 for programming and $27 per key. Thanks.
I've called a couple places. And they said they didn't do it because of the chip. But I can try some others. Anything I should look for or just call around?
Getting the key made is the easy part, any hardware store can cut the key,but it has to have the chip, and to top it off you have to have that 2nd key programed before it will start your truck. As far as i know only a ford dealer can get into the pats system to do this, the keys are expensive but the programing should take no longer than 15 minutes.
According to the owners manual you have to have 2 programed keys inorder to program a 3rd key, or up to a total of 8 keys. The reason for the first 2 keys is so you can't test drive a vehicle or rent one and have a duplicate key made so you can steal it. That information is in your Owners Guide under Locks and Security. The directions to program the keys are in that section also but you have to have 2 keys first.
If you only have one key the dealer can do it with their scanner. YOu have to place the vehicle in program mode for about 10 min and then you can program the key. You can only add a key yoruself if you have the first 2.
