When I had a 11 foot slide in camper with the bunk overhang and the back end and side's covered up with the camper the only place was on the hood left front by the cowling all the way to the top, does not bother the hood or any part of the truck, took a trunk mount mounting bracket and put it right at the top of the hood on the hood next to the cowling and put a K-40 whip on it,the coax run's through the fire wall using one of the rubber knock out plug's,it's plug and play,SWR run's 1.1 to 1 to 1.3 to 1 depending on the channel, left it there when we got the 5th wheel, been on 4 year'sno issue's,BTW,that is on a 2002 F350 4 door dullie long bed not that it matter's.
Glass mounts are a waste (efficiency) IMHO at any frequency. For anything (CB, Cell, Ham, Commerical, GPS, etc.). I used to use a mag mount for a while on the cab roof. The coax showing looked terrible. No as efficient. Bad ground plane. Can be a projectile in an accident. Bite the bullet and drill the 3/4" hole for an NMO mount. The antenna will thank you. I have NO problem with rain/snow getting in. Use a GOOD QUALITY NMO connector. Used a hole saw made for such application. Nice clean look. I also plan on drilling another hole for a GPS antenna. A spring project.
I'm no fan of glassmounts. I've had the VSWR jump from 1:1 to almost 10:1 on a Larsen 2/70 Glassmount. I'll take a magmount or NMO hole anyday.
I have an articulating edge mount now that works fairly well, and get a decent (but not best) ground plane.
Really? A mag mount over an perm NMO? I have no need to take the 2/70 off but I do have an NMO rain cap in the glove box just incase. Just unscrew the antenna and put the rain cap on. Few minutes.
Sorry bout the last post. I thought it said "magmount OVER a NMO hole". Not what you typed. Sorry.
Hah! s'ok. It depends on your vehicle situation. Of course if you're leasing every paint scratch has a $10,000 charge on it when you turn in the lease.
If you are going to do a stake-pocket mount, checkout the GEOTOOL mount that is mentioned on the website RMO1 posted a link to. I bought the GEOTOOL for my truck two months ago. It was a little on the pricey side, but well worth it. It is quality made, and has a 5/8" bolt securing it from the bottom of the stake pocket. Installation was easy, and it you hit something with the antenna, it won't bend the top of your stake hole as the ones will that tighten-down with the screw from the top. I contacted the owner of GEOTOOL several times on his cell phone (listed on his website) and he was very helpful. He has put a lot of thought and time into the design of the mount.
