Question OD Shift on manual trans

I have a '00 F-350 7.3L PSD with the 6-speed manual transmission. Just recently I notice he's sluggish when shifting into OD at highway speeds. No slipping, no problems in lower gears. He has 260k on him, but is in good shape and running well, with no other problems (knock on wood).

I'm by no means a mechanic and can only do minor repairs/maintenance, but I know there is no trans fluid on the manual.. just gear oil and only worry about it if there's a leak, which I find no evidence of ...

Anybody out there have any ideas???

When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed? In 2000, they were probably using ATF. I know they were by 2004 and all the way up until just the later years.

Can you describe sluggish more? It's probably a synchronizer getting weak. But if the oil is very old, it might help it to have new oil.

I don't have service records for the truck, but if it's EVER been changed it was prior to 2005.

I would get new fluid in it and see if it helps.

and I'm sorry, sluggish probably wasn't the best description. It sounds more like an overo-revving...(BUT the RPMs don't change) and after 30 seconds.. or a few miles... it will finally drop into OD and quiet down...

I know, sorry I"m not better at describing it..

So after you shift it into OD the engine revs? That sounds like a clutch slipping. But it would probably do that in all gears.

sorry for the stupid questions, but IS there fluid that I can change? or is it gear oil like I've been told the manual transmission has.. and would it have to be done at a shop?

According to your Owner's Manual, it uses about 6 quarts of Mercon ATF. Any Mercon compatible fluid should work. Whether or not you can change it just depends on your skill level. You need an oil pan and it helps to have a pump.

Basically, there are two plugs on transmission, one on the bottom and one on the side. You need to take the one on the side out, then take the one on the bottom out and let the old oil drain out into a pan. Put the bottom one back in, then pump fluid into the top one until the fluid is level with the hole. Then put the top plug back in.

That's about it.
