Question Trans question?

Hey guys, I KNOW this is the wrong place, but I like you guys better. My question is about my M5OD in my 1989 F150. I told you that I bought this truck with the trans locked up, cause it had been run with NO trans oil. I might have found a "good" used one? My question is: Is there any way at all of checkin this thing before installing it? I know I can check and see if it has oil in it, and move the shifter into the gears, but other than that is there anything else I can look for?

Thanks guys!!

You can drop the pan and check for burned fluid, or parts, change the filter. Hard to tell if the plates are burned up tho.

Ah, its a manual.. check the fluid for parts..

You can take the shift tower off the transmission and then visually inspect the gears.

This is a 5 speed manual trans. I would drain the fluid and check for any metal shavings in it, this should give you an idea of condition.

If it has a magnetic drain plug it`s a good place to also look for filings.

If it doesn't shift into all the gears easily now, it won't later. (you may need to rotate the input shaft a little while shifting)

Or check the parts for fluid.

On top on the back, I think are leaking points, they have a fix for that. secondly, I'd check the integral hydraulic clutch hose for cuts or kinks, cuz the whole tranny has to be dropped to get to it, so might as well make sure ahead of time that it is good.

Non removeable bells are a PITA.
