'51 4-speed tranny question
Has anyone gone through one of these tranny's? When I pulled mine, I set it down nose-down, and it leaked oil all over the floor. So I'm assuming front seal? All the pics I have seen, show a bearing, is that a sealed bearing? Tough to get out and replace? Inquiring minds, want to know...
Thanks,

Yeah, just a slinger is what it looked like in my feeble drawing. If that's the case, wouldn't it be likely that it would eventually leak, if left standing on it's nose? I mean, the oil might work it's way out?
I really don't want to tear into the tranny if I can help it. But, I am concerned that the oil could get into the clutch, although when I took it apart, there was NO evidence of oil in the bell housing.
???
Thanks again,
R

They most likely didn't design the tranny to sit on it's nose so they might not have worried about it leaking. As long as the tranny gear lube fill line was below the input shaft it won't leak. I am pretty sure all of the trannies I have taken out of the parts trucks I have had leaked if I let them rest on their sides.

Tranny Leaks
The old trannys didn't use a seal on the input shaft they used what is called a labryinth seal. Nothing more than a threaded section of the input shaft that directs the oil back into the case. The threads work like an auger and pull the oil back . It's inportant not to overfill these trans as they will leak when not running. It's also important that the bearing retainer be clear of sealant and the gasket is positioned correctly so the drain hole is open. Try not to park your truck with the nose severly downhill as there is the possibility of getting gear oil on the clutch.
