oiling ideas

As some of you know I recently bought a 68 bumpside with a 360, and I got a few stupid questions. 10 What weight oil are you guys running, I'm thinking 10w30 ought ot be about right. Also, if I put an oil bypass (the kind that goes between the filter and the mounting pad) in and run an oil cooler will it cause a serious pressure drop in my stock 360 with a factory original oil pump (prepping for the 410 build, it will have a high pressure hi volume pump in it) and can i use an automatic trans radiator and use the tranny cooler as an oil cooler? It'd save me mfrom having to fab brackets to bolt one in, and be a little more "stealth" to most onlookers.

First, don't try to use the radiator trans cooler as an engine oil cooler. It can't flow anywhere near the oil volume that you need for the engine. I also have doubts about it being strong enough to take the oil pressure. The trans cooling circuit is a return line so actually has very little pressure and structurally the cooler is pretty weak.
what weight oil depends on several factors. How's the oil pressure, is the engine in good shape or is it pretty worn? If it maintains good oil pressure when warm, I don't see any problem running 10W30. Just be sure to use an oil thats formulated for flat tappet engines.
Plumbed properly, you shouldn't see much, if any, pressure drop.

Mike, I'm running Rotella 15w-40 in my 360, what do you plan on using? I'm not sure if the Rotella still has the zddf additives in sufficient quantities anymore or not. To the OP, why would you want a "stealth" oil cooler? Just curious.

I haven't decided what oil I'm going to use once I get the pumpkin back on the road. Right now it's filled with Competition Cams break in oil.

As Mike said, if it holds good pressure there's nothing wrong with 10w30 here in TX. That's what I run. If it's old and tired you might try 15w40.
According to Bullit390, who is in the know about these things, the Rotella 15w40 still has plenty of zddp. I think the reports he mentioned all had anywhere from 1200-1450ppm with an avg in the 1300s.
If you're not going to run the 15w40 or 20w50? Rotella, then you'll have to get one of the specialty oils for flat tappets. I run Brad Penn because 10w30 fit the bill for me. It was like $4.xx/qt which isn't bad at all. You could also use Valvoline VR1, or Joe Gibbs.

I don't have enough experience with oil coolers to know what kind of pressure change you would see. I imagine as long as the fittings are as large as the rest of the passages in your block/filter you should see very little change in psi.

I would prefer 10w-30 but cant find it locally in any flat tappet friendly brands. The only Vr1 around is 20w-50. Guess I could order something. Sorry for the hijack

Dallas was the closest place to me that had the Brad Penn at one of the parts stores (120miles) but I got them to throw it on the next truck to Waco so I didn't have a huge shipping charge so that made it a lot better. You might try that.
If not then I've found Paradise Road Speed & Custom has some of the lowest prices, at least for the BP anyway.

I run 10W40 in my 428 cj with no problems. I also suggest a hi volume pump and not a hi press. pump.

I discovered when I ran into the guy that sold the truck to the buddy i got it from that the 360 has an Edelbrock cam and valvesprings, so do I still need a flat tappet friendly formula? gotcha, no go on the trans cooler as an oil cooler. THe idea was to keep the truck as "stock appearing" as possible to the uninitiated. So would 5w30 be a better idea for around here?

VR-1 10w-30w will be fine. Most chain stores only carry the 20w-50w, but I order it by the case at my local mom and pop parts store. NAPA should be able to get it for you.

It's still a flat tappet cam so yes. Unless you convert to a hydraulic or solid roller cam and lifters (read $$$) then you need a flat tappet friendly oil. I run 10w30 in the winter and 15w40 in the summer. It's not cold enough here IMO to need a 5w oil.

Oh I forgot to mention Mobil 1 15w50 Extended Performance in the list earlier. It also has plenty of zddp. Should be easier to find than the specialty stuff, and that's a good weight for the 100°+ heat.

Good catch 69cj. I would opt for just the Hi volume pump also, you don't need the hi-vol/hi-pressure.

Are you saying it has the proper amounts of ZDDP?

Yes it does. Looked at several UOA's on BITOG and it shows to have around 1100+ ppm.

Rotella 15w40 here. Broke in my 360 with it without any ZDDP additive. Just spoke with the oil rep yesterday at the garage where my son works. Rotella still has the goods. Another great oil is Valvoline VV. Can be found at Napa and Ebay. No additives required.
