Hey Guys, I have a E4OD in my bronco, it has an electronic transfer case. If i go with a C6 that had a manual Transfer case, will i be able to bolt my Electronic one up? Anyone Running a 78-79 bronco style trans/transfer case in there 80's 90's bronco or 150?
As long as your C-6 has the 6-bolt circular style mount it will bolt right up to the BW 1356 electric or manual case. The big issue is that on the electric case you have to find the wire that goes to ground on the transmission when it is in neutral, no a big deal if you have the wiring diagram. Also, you need to wire the neutral start safety switch so that the truck will start. The C-6 is roughly 7 inches shorter than the E4OD so drive shafts are a big issue. You could use the E4OD cross member or find a cross member from an 80s and up truck with a C-6 or AOD to mount up the C-6 in your bronco and not have to drill holes in the frame, just requires all brackets that support the cross member on the frame as well as getting clearance from the foot boards to put the bolts in the upper part of the frame. A computer may be in order but you can run the E4OD computer as long as you dont mind the CEL on the dash being always on. Another thing is the shift linkage and the kick down cables both can be salvaged from a C-6 truck with fuel injection, otherwise you will be making many custom pieces just to link the trans up.
Been there, done that, and had many headaches in dealing with the swap. You can put in the NP-205 t-case in the truck but you will have to trim the C-6 housing for it or obtain the rear housing from an early C-6 that mounted to the NP-205 to accomodate the shift linkage.
for that amount of trouble you might consider going with a zf 5speed manual. you get a granny low first gear and still retain an OD gear for the hwy. when my e4od fails i will probably go this route
The manual has just some different steps associated with it, now you have to add in Clutch pedal/brake pedal swap as well as plumbing for the hydrallic clutch and a flywheel. I like my C-6 but still wished I had gone for the ZF, Though with a ZF at almost 1000 dollars just for a used serviceable one from the salvage yards kind of made the C-6 a nice cheap alternative to getting on the road again.
i need an option that will handle a 400 plus Horsepower big block. And my E4OD wont bolt up to it. I know a C6 will and when built they are a nice transmission. Im just worried about my transfer case. I like manuals, but for what im using the truck for i think a manual would hurt me. Alot of sand dune climbing where i need tire speed. Also getting the pedals and everything, to tell you the truth i dont wanna deal with it. And yes the axles will be beefed up too.
well would you also be driving this on the street? the zf will handle that power no problem and comes in small, big block bolt patterns. the peddles swap right over as well. this is becoming a popular swap.
If you are talking about the 460, you could just trade the tranny in for a 460 E4OD. The E4OD is the only auto overdrive bolted to the 460, and like the C-6 you can not just use a Windsor tranny on a 335/385 series engines.
Same place really, sell the windsor E4OD then re 'invest' in a 460 E4OD. Try Craigslist as well because you can sometimes find items there. Also, look for some local Salvage yards that specialize in 4x4's, sometimes they will make a deal on trading parts around.
