I just bought this Bronco missing the transmission, transfer case, rear driveshaft, and crossmember. I believe it's a 5.0 (not positive) and believe it had a AOD since there's an OD position on the shifter indicator. I need to know which transfer case it takes so I can start shopping. If there are better bolt-on options than whatever was stock I'd be interested to know that too. The shifter has two small bolt holes about 1/2" apart if that helps ID which T-case I need.
From what I've read the 5.8 would have a C6 meaning I have a 5.0; is that correct?
Does the truck have pushbuttons to select 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive or does it have a hole in the floor for a shift lever?
The only electronic T-case was the Borg-Warner 1356 in the full-size trucks. Manual cases were typically Borg Warner 1356's or New Process 205's. Either will work. Both are chain-driven in 4WD. If you want something stronger, the NP203 and Atlas units are gear driven and inherently stronger while the 203 can be engaged in a "full-time" manner as it has an internal differential to compensate for the differences in gear ratio between front and rear axles. (The Bronco rear axles were geared 0.01 "taller" than the fronts. i.e. 3.55:1 rear axles were paired with 3.54:1 fronts.) This discrepancy will cause chain stretch in chain driven units if you run on dry pavement in 4WD. Geared units will suffer as well unless a viscous coupler or intermediate differential gearing is employed like in the NP203.
