I hope this isn't one of those threads that's been done to death. I searched the forum and didn't find it. It's just that time of year for looking back and after reading Nick's post about the X mods he got for Christmas, it got me thinking about being 15 (and that was a long time ago) and my first truck. I bought a 1968 Ford F100 Custom with a straight 6 and three on the tree. The bushings were worn out so if you put it in Reverse or Second you had to hold the shifter up or it would just fall out of gear! Since it was a Michigan truck (where I grew up) it had virtually no floor boards, but the highway department was kind enough to lend me some extra speed limit signs (no one ever paid attention to them anyway) and that solved that problem. Some 2x10 barn planks made a gread bed and with the help of my two best friends and some left over green house paint it looked pretty good from 50 feet or so. My friend nicknamed it Godzilla because it was green, ugly and occasionally belched fire . Looking back it was a death trap and I would never let my son drive something like it; it's amazing I survived my Junior and Senior years. It did however give me endless projects for shop class, a sense of freedom and a love for trucks thats lasted 3 decades. It was a beast, but it was mine and I loved it.
My first car was a 1965 Mustang with a 289ci motor. Drove that motor into the ground and then my dad and I dropped a 302 into it that my dad lovingly built himself that made it dig up pavement. That car was scary fast and super fun to drive. I wish I had never sold it.
THE ORIGINAL HOOPTY - 1972 Volvo, baby blue, 4 door, 4 speed, 4 cyl. I bought it from my dad for $400. He did mention it had a small oil leak and to check it regularly. Alas... I ran it out of oil and seized the motor up 3 weeks later! Talk about learning the hard way!
On Edit: Keep your laughter to a minimum!

My first car... was a truck. A 1978 Ford 12ft flat bed, lumber rack and all. It had holes in the manifolds big enough to fit your thumb in. it had a 351 modified motor and a three speed auto trans. Once I learned that if I revved it up and shut it off it would back fire louder then a 12g gun shot it was almost a fun vehicle to drive. (poor bicycle riders) I could only drive it for 10 min. before it would turn off and not start again for an hour. I had a nice little routine going to and from work... hahaha
The Pinto... my buddy's dad was a Ford mechnic and got him a 78, painted Canary Yellow! Man that was the party car! I'd like to say I could remember half of what we did, but then I guess it woudn't have been as much fun I ran into him a few years back and he said he'd seen one for sale and had a case of nostalgia and bought it!
96 Chevy 1500 4x4 diesel. My parents family mini-van needed replacing. My father didn't think we could afford a good truck, so we bought the Chev... It turned out we couldn't afford not to own a good truck. 2 injector pumps, 3 dash clusters, 2 fuel level sensors, and multiple other R&R parts were replaced by the warranty. We didn't have many problems after 100k, but at something like 214k I rolled it 5 times into a pature and walked away with literally only a single scratch on my head and a moderate amount of whiplash.
I've never liked Chevy's, but I did love that truck.
It was an old peach farmers truck, and had a custom made (read: sheet of plywood) laid across the bed rails so his workers could pull up next to a peach tree and harvest it. I got it when I was 14 but wasn't allowed to drive it by myself till I was 15. I used it to haul me and a buddy around for a little lawn service buisness we had. Cut grass monday through thursday, go to the lake on friday and put all our money into the gas tank of the truck and boat. Even lined the bed with visqueen, and duct tape, and made a swimming pool out of it for homecoming when we were seniors in high school. Man, life was good.
