I finally did it!!! I talked my Dad into getting rid of his (excuse the four letter word) Hemi!! I also talked him into a PSD. We have been looking at some 05 F-250's. The truck will mainly be used for hauling calves to the sale. We would like to get a six speed, but my mother can't drive a stick very well. Can you put an exhaust brake on without hurting the Torqshift? What can you do to make it blow a little black smoke when it shifts besides turning the pump up without any long term damage to the engine? Do you recomend Straight - Piping one of these trucks or will it cause damage? Can you revert back to 16 inch wheels on these trucks? I know there is a lot of questions but my last truck was an 86 6.9 with no turbo. The only mod was putting a 3 inch straight pipe on it. It smoked like a chimney & sounded great. Any help would be greatly appreciated before he changes his mind & buys a Duracrapper.

Drop down to the 6.0 section of the forum, and search for your questions as most have been answered in multiple threads. Also read the 6.0 Tech folder located there.
BD makes an exhaust brake that works with the 6.0, but you probably will not need it as the Torqueshift in Tow/Haul mode does some serious engine braking. Black smoke will take a tuner, but if you are making black smoke the engine is not properly tuned and only wasting fuel. The tuner of choice is the SCT XCal III with custom tunes from Matt at Spartan diesel. You cannont mess with the fuel pump system on the 6.0 like you could with the 6.9. You can striaght pipe them if you wish with no ill effects to the engine. As Ace said you cannot install 16" wheels on the 05 & newer SD, 17-inch is the minimum wheel size to clear brake calipers.
Yeah, no need for an exhaust brake with the Torqshift, tow/haul mode holds it back nicely with decent loads. We weighed 31,800 pounds hauling firewood with our 24ft gooseneck trailer and it wasn't an issue coming down the mountain.
What in your guys' mind is the best year of PSD? Dad's (bad word again sorry) Hemi is an 03 & he would gor a year or two older but he'd like to go a year or two newer. He has to have a 4x4, a crew cab, & probably an automatic. We confirmed it today MOM CAN'T DRIVE A SIX SPEED.
I have an 04, but if I was starting over I would try to get an 05-07, not because I am having any trouble, but they changed a lot of stuff on the suspension in 05, most notably the front coil springs which makes the turning radius much better. With a crew cab you are going to need all of the turning help you can get.
Also, if you are getting a stick, you might want to look at a 02-03 with a 7.3, but if your going automatic, definately go with the 6.0.
