Block Heater question

Hello everyone. On my 2000 F-250 I want to add either 2 Frost plug block heaters or a circulating heater. If someone has done this I would like to know how they went about it. ie. size, location and wattage of block heaters or circulating heater, what material they required and what modification that might have been required. I want to do this myself but don't quite know how to go about it, any help would be appreciated Thanks.

WELCOME to FTE!!!

If you don't mind my asking.... Why do you want/need to do this? Does the existing block heater not do enough?

I want to pre warm the engine a little more so I can minimize my warm up time on cold days.

Does the stock block heater not work? Mine only needs about two hours of being plugged in to do a great job, but I'm not up where you are, either.

Might be easier and overall more convenient to get a remote starter.

Yah the stock one works, I'm just lookin for a little more. My last vehicle which had dual plugs had temperature on the gauge after about 3 hrs, I thought it was the greatest to have immediate heat in the engine and in the cab, never even had to warm the truck up in the winter, just get in and go. It was a big block gas mind you but it shouldn't be any different in my diesel.

Understand.

Hopefully, someone will chime in on this. I find it hard to believe that no one else has yet... not typical.

Worst case scenario is to to the warmup remotely with the remote starter. It's a compromise, but it provides the warm interior upon entry.

I'm kinda at a loss, but with Pete on the remote start. I don't have any idea about how much a setup like you are talking about cost, but does sound kinda expensive. A remote start setup will have the cab toasty and ready to go in about 3-5 minutes and even melt the ice off the windshield. Dang, I've almost talked myself into one.

If you're planning on running both, you'll need two different circuits from the breaker box. The stock one pretty much takes up all the current a standard household outlet can provide. If you plug two heaters in, you'll most likely pop the breaker. Just a heads up...

One other thing I've been wondering about. Don't we already get a certain amount of convective heat circulation due to the heated coolant returning back to the radiator? I know it doesn't open the t-stat, but I would think that some of the heat goes back up through the lower hose. I honestly don't know about this one, though.... just thunking out loud.

Yep -- it will convect, but I don't know how much since I've never plugged mine in (previous knowlege of other vehicles with heaters). I might do it the next time we get a cold snap just to see how it does. If you feel the radiator hoses, they should be warm, so you know it's working.

you get faster heat through the heater core with the heater I posted then you do with our PSD block heater...it heats coolant and circulates it though the block and the heater core as its heating. our PSD heats the other side of the thermostat.. it cant circulate through the heater till stat opens... but I wouldn't depend on the heater I posted for a only heater..we have a oil cooler down below that needs to keep warm.....

Katz is the manufacturer of the block heater posted, they are alot cheaper than a remote starter and install by splicing into the heater hose. Have used them and installed to darn many of them when I lived in MN. Great item in the real cold climates, have been toying with one for my truck as it was -8 the other morning. The factory one is great for easy starting but does not do much for heating the coolant for warm air on the cold days. Just my .02.
