I will be repalcing the head gasket on my 1950 F1 inline six this weekend. Does anyone have the bolt pattern and the torque specs for a six? My service manual will not be in before Christmas. I would like to have this project completed by then.
It doesn't say in the shop manual, and it probably came about because of the aftermarket heads, but I've heard from the old gurus to torque the bolts in 3 steps - 30-50-70 ft/lbs. It keeps the long flat heads from warping or setting up uneven.
Even if it's not recommended in the manual it sure makes sense and can't hurt. It can kind of remember doing the same when I installed mine 25+ years ago. My dad was a master mechanic when these were more common and I am sure he stood behind me when I did mine and gave me pointers.
There's a lot we need to learn from the old timers before they're all gone. It's easy to write a manual and know how things "should" go together but nothing beats experience.
