1950 F1 headbolt question ?

1950 F1 headbolt question ?
I just took the head off my 1950 F1 straight six engine. Some bolts had a taper washers on them. The rest didn't have the washer on them. Are the washers significant? Do all the headbolts need the washers?

I'd inspect the head carefully to see if there is a reason tapered washers were used.
The shop manual says nothing about washers at all - just says to coat the threads of the bolts with waterproof sealant and install to proper torque.
Best I can do - I don't have an inline flathead..........yet!

I'd have to agree about wondering why there would be tapered washers used. I don't remember any on my 52 flathead 6. I do remember having to find some new ones which I think I found through Sacramento Vintage Ford. Hope this helps.

On flat V8's I've heard of using washers with an internal bevel and an O-ring that fits in the bevel, to stop water leaking around the bolts. Someone may have tried a similar thin? I'd go back with machined hardened flat washers.
