cost to change head gaskets
#2
Actually I would be interested in the same thing!
Been reading here for months learning alot but I'd like to start doing mods to my work truck, but not having much luck finding a shop that can do everything from simple exhaust to head gaskets and everything in between.
I live around Williamsport, PA and have asked a lot of people about shops, but it seems most shops SAY they can do it, but haven't done it all yet, and I've had waaaay to many problems with this truck to go yet another round with a garage.
Any info about shops in PA would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

cheezit- i am in no way saying you are wrong so dont misunderstand me-
but man, it just blows my mind when i read "25" hours for a head gasket repair... how can anyone even afford that !!!!! and what percentage of 6.0's burn up head gaskets ?
my HG's were just tested i guess and they were fine. but then i put a mild tuner in it... am i guaranteed a $3500 dollar bill sometime down the line ?

if you fail to maintain your truck then most likly yes.
who can afford to pay that I have no idea. I wish I know how anyone could afford to get there car/truck fixed.
I know I do all my own work and thats why im able to do what I do.
If you question the time Ive stated then I you should have a look at tsb 09-08-03.
the times listed on that tsb is what ford warranty will pay to do the job. customer pay is 140% of warranty time, +adds for things like ranchhands and lights. typical customer pay time from a tsb repair is 150%. the reason for the 10% add is because ford has already cut the times.
Anyone that has doen a set will tell you at 25 hours its a fair price to all.
so far as what percentage blows head gaskets, I really dont know there are millions of trucks and I only see a very small percentage. I work on maybe 400-500 (not counting reflashes and recalls)trucks a year would be my guess. less then 5% were head gaskets last year. Also keep in mind I work in an oilfield heavy area were I am at. So we see state, county, and beat down oil field stuff.
IF you have other questions about this feel free to ask

it just amazes me ! heck, you would think a person could rebuild the whole engine in 25 hours!
i feel like i do a far better job at maintaining my truck than alot of people out there... oil changes every 5K, fuel filters every year, i take it in pretty much ASAP when theres an "issue" fuel treatment ( cleaner ) a couple times a year, just cleaned my EGR valve, and i try to make sure all the fluids are always good.
though, i tow 10-15,000 pounds a few times a week, sometimes a few loads a day. and when i need to change lanes, she gets the full throttle quite a bit... might seem like a race car on occasion... but i do feel like i have been good to this truck, compared to my last 3 !

Ill add some more for you to ponder. I would have to go look it to 100% on this but....
to o/haul an engine would run between 45-50 hours. now that includes remove and install as well.
I just did a warranty reseal last week.. r/i engine and reseal all but the heads. was 22.8 hours or something close.

i flushed mine last week, 90K on the truck, i cant remember if i have flushed it before or had it done ever.
but there was no build up / sand or any nightmares in the bucket like i have read of some other peoples posts.
