The shifter is not hooked up to anything now. I can see that there is a hole at the bottom of the shifter, similar to my manual shifter. Basically, it looks like whatever was connected to it has broken off completely.
What are the parts that connect the bottom of the shifter to whatever it is that engages the 4x4(what is that called?). Maybe a diagram would help me.
This is on a 73 f100 302. My friend tells me that with the custom motor mounts for the 302, it looks like there might have been a 460 in it originally. Also, he was telling me that I have what is called a "high boy". Whatever that means, but he says it has a unique transmission and may have other unique parts associated with it. Any truth to that?

It wasn't a 460 if it had 4WD originally = 1st 460 4WD = 1983.
4th digit of the VIN is the engine size: A = 240 / B = 300 / Y = 360.
Transfer Case Shifter Illustration = 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog ~ Section 70 / Page 2.
You might ask Mil1ion to post the illustration, he has this parts catalog on a CD.
If your truck has been lifted, you'll have to fab the parts, unless something's available in the aftermarket sector.
AFAIK, Ford didn't offer a F100/250 4WD in the 1970's with a 302 engine.
Only 240/300 I-6's or 360 V8's had 4WD 1973/76. 1977/79: 300 I-6, or 351M/400's.
The term "High Boy" originally applied to 1973/early 1977 F250 4WD Regular Cabs. High Boy is not Ford nomenclature.

just get under the truck and look at the shifter. I've seen a couple of those bent plate sort of things attached to the shifters just snap in half right below the pivot point, the one on my truck was like that when i got it, i just welded it back together. Another common thing is the little rod going from the transfer case to the shifter is only held in place with a little cotter key kind of thing, it's not the best cotter key ever used and if someone took it out they become pretty weak by just taking them out, and if they put them back in sometimes they're too weak to stay in place and fall out, letting the rod come out eventually.
I've actually had the short piece of linkage (7B051) snap in half on me. What really made it fun was then the transfer case was in neutral and I had a heck of a time getting into anything so I could get it back home.
