The restoration of my '75 Bronco is near completion after 2 yrs. But I have come to a situation, as simple as it sounds, has be baffled. That is, I can't remember how the transfer case shifter (J type) connects to the TC?!?!
I have the shifter rod bolted to the case (with the two bolts), and the rod is going thru the slot on the case. But the bottom of the shifter rod has a small hole in it for a spring. This is where I'm lost......
I don't know what the spring looks like nor do I know where the other end of the spring attaches. And is there more than just a spring that I am looking for? Is there something else that goes on the end of the shifter rod?
I have searched the internet over and over and can not find a thing on it. I've even called a couple of the Bronco places....and they can't tell me???
Ultimately, I would love to have a pic....but I know it is a really tight spot . Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Kirk!
Hello and welcome to the site! Lotta good n helpful folk here.
Doesn't say where U R in MO but I'm sure we have some members near U...and I'm not sure your exact Q (just MY ignorance).
As I look @ the linkage, there is no spring. The upper and lower rods come out and have interlocking plates which slide over eachother. The shifting mechanism comes out of the bottom of the (sorry don't have the terminology) ball the selector (U hold in ur hand to shift) exits from. It has a right angle which engages the 2 plates on the shift rods. You must B on the inside of the case?
Some of the vendors have exploded views in their cat...JBG seems to B the most user friendly (has a site as well - classic broncos dot com or some of the other bronk sites). I would ask a vendor (over the 2 yrs. U must have a good relationship w/1 or another). I would ask 4 tech service there & question them - they like to sell U stuff!). It's a Dana 20 (I think) U could call them or got to a site. Lastly if U don't know BCBroncos - they R friendly & provide tech ***. lots.
U could post ur email here or to my PM (select @ my name by the avatar, pop up menu, scroll to PM & send me 1) w/ur email add. if U think a photo of the external workings would benefit, & I can send U a photo of 1 out of the rig sitting in my yrd. U can't send/rec photos for another 24 posts I don't believe.
Great pic!!! I don't know how you got up in there that close but you did GREAT job!!
Unfortunately, you have a "T" shift type and mine is a "J" type. One of the very few things different between the two is how the shft rod connects. Wouldn't you know it!!
I do have a transmission guy coming over to look at it, so it may get resolved once he takes a peak.
But thank you for taking the time to help me out. I really appreciate that.
Yea Rich....I have a Dana 20....but so do you. I think they changed from a "T" handle to a "J" in like '71 or '72.
The diagram you have from a '80's Chilton will likely show the transfer case from a "80"'s Bronco (of which used the Dana 20 as well...but also had a different configuration for the shift rod. But maybe not!!! It's certainly worth a try if you don't mind going to all the trouble.
Here are the shift rods in neutral for what it's worth. Still never seen a spring on the linkage, although I can see where it would hold shifter to one side.
