Won't turn over

I've searched but can't find any posts describing exactly what is happening.....

'78 F150 w/ 460, AT. Replaced both battery cables, charged battery. Getting 12.6V at the battery side of the starter solenoid. As soon as I try to start it it, the solenoid clicks once, the starter never turns the engine over, and it reads less than 1.0V at the battery side of the starter solenoid. If I wiggle the cable on the positive battery post, it will start getting 12.6V again. I repeated this 3x with the same results. Am I looking at a new starter solenoid, new starter, new battery, or something else?

thanks,
Chris

You have a high resistance connection somewhere between the battery and the starter solenoid, or a bad battery. Does the voltage right at the battery posts stay at 12V when the voltage drops at the solenoid?

Since you said the voltage comes back when you wiggle the positive cable, I would start looking there.

Try this.

If that yields the same result.

Attach a booster cable from the batter to the large starter lug and see if that gets the starter cranking.

Thanks for the replies, I tried jumpering at the solenoid and it did the same thing. I'll try a booster cable tomorrow; I'm assuming it just needs to connect the positive terminal on the battery to the starter post on the solenoid? If this works, and the booster turns the starter, does that indicate a bad battery or bad solenoid??

Thanks again!
Chris

Solution!

Thanks for the help. I jumpered from the battery straight to the starter post, and it turned right over, thank goodness. i took off both battery cables and cleaned all metal to metal connections with a wire wheel and the problem is solved.

Thanks again!
