what issues with a gear drive??

i would like to install a noisey gear drive timingset in my truck when i tear into her(because im a redneck ok), so i did a google search and read on someones site and they said that he needed to do some grinding on the block to get the gear drive to fit properly, now has anyone ever ran into this issue??

also, all of these 335 series gear drives are going to be straight up design correct? or will they be adjustable?

lastly, does anyone think there is any issues that i could deal with gear drive?

Check out http://www.network54.com/Forum/119419/ and ask around for info on this...
And here is a long-winded thread on another forum about the reasons you should never use a gear drive on a Ford: http://www.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=867706

I don't really have an opinion on the matter, since I think a gear drive can sound cool on the right vehicle, and I also think that well made chain sets work fantastic and some will regularly hold up to 9000 rpm (billet) nicely... Be aware that there have been some fitment issues like in the last thread, but I think it had to do with the cam plate, and it was on a 5.0...

You will need to change the camshaft if you go from chain drive to gear drive.

Really? They make specific cams for gear drives??? This is the first I've heard of it, though I've never used a gear drive..
What would the difference be?

If you think about it, you will see that with the chain drive the crank and cam turn the same direction. With gears, the crank will drive the cam backwards from the way it is designed.

nonsense. If you actually LOOK at a gear set, you'll see it's not just two gears (which WOULD reverse the rotation,) but 4, with two smaller gears between the larger gears on the cam and crank. so the main gears DO rotate in the same direction...

for examples, http://search.ebay.com/search/search...trypage=search

You do NOT need to change the cam, but I have heard there can be problems with harmonics being transfered with gear drives that chains would absorb. I have run gear drives on clevelands a couple times and never had a problem but what i did learn is A you don't gain any power, B you don't gain any (actually lose) reliability and longevity, and C it's not really that good of a setup cause they have limits like some say not over 6000rpm etc.
As to grinding on the block I think thats the milidon drives that do that, the dog bone style don't need to. some guys say Never run a dog bone style but personally after using and researching them I find them to be a waste of money but they do sound cool.

If it is as you say, then yes, it would be the same rotation.

Here ya go Bruce

BTW thats the "dog bone" style I was refering to. this is the floating gear style or the other choice as it were.

this is also the style that requires machining of the engine block.

I had a Pete Jackson in a 400. I took it out when the water pump went bad because I was sick of everyone telling me I had a bad power steering pump. P.m. me I'd make you a good deal on it.
