curious

do the newer 7.3's come with the 6 speeds?
I would think if they had the 6 speeds, then they would be a direct bolt up to the OBS 7.3's.

Zf5 is great tranny, but why not another gear!

Anyone know the drive ratio's for the 7.3 psd zf5 and the newer zf6?

Yes the 99-up truck have the zf-6. no they are not a direct bolt in for our trucks. they are longer. Somebody here has done it but I can't remember who. I think the driveshafts need some work and some other stuff but not really sure.

Also if i remember. You will get a crawl first gear. I think 5 and 6 are same top gear ratio. But then again my memory is shot! What would be nice is if the PSD had the RPM bumpup as you lift the clutch like the dodge.

Bill you are correct as far as I can remember. Granny gear under first and same OD ratio.

The 5spd has a crawl 1st gear close to 6:1 IIRC. It sure gets the load moving!! TJ - are you saying the 6spd 1st gear is even deeper?

The 6sp has a low gear, then first gear. Yes the 6sp has a gear that is even deeper. Don't know the ratio but its near unuseable in a PSD from what I remember

I hear both those trannies are popular in the competition rock crawling crowd - because of their strength and low gear ratios.

It's 5.72:1, or is that 5.79:1? I forget, but one of those two is the right ratio.

Also, IIRC, the 6 spd is taller and the floor pan/trans hump has to be reworked. But it will bolt up to the engine with no problem.

Yea, the ZF 6 is almost identical to the zf5 for 1-5, but it has L, which most trannys dont.
However, the truck i rode in with the zf6 was a PSD. He said its helpfull pulling trailers, dont have to use the gass, just let out the clutch.

Just sparking my curiosity. I love gears. More gears you have more options, (more to go wrong too. hah) but, if you want to skip in a manual, you can.

I dont know why you would want an RPM bump up after clutch depress, Thats friggen annoying as shat in a Gasser. Its annoying enough mine doesn't return to idle for 15 seconds half the time.
I understand the purpose of the thing, to speed up the syncro's. but. syncro's suck. Ask any old trucker. haha

In the dodge you just release the clutch and the pcm rpm's the motor for you.
No need to touch throttle until clutch is enguaged. I think it helps most from burning up clutches. Here is a funny part. Most that drive them dont even know it does this.
If you get a chance check it out. Its cool. All it does is burp the throttle.
You can tell when its in netural and you press/depress clutch it burps the throttle. It burps on release of the pedal.

that might be cool and all, but, uh...
I would only like it if i cant hear it do it.

I dont let off the gass before i shift. So, im on the gass when i press the clutch in, so same effect naturally.

My truck has a huge wind up of slop in the drive train too. so if yo udont shift right, it crashes together like something is breaking.

my dads 6 spd low gear is ok, but second could be a bit lower, for taking off moderate loads. we can take off with 23000+ pounds without touching fuel in granny

btw- when we had our farm logged, the loggers all drove superdutys, and said that their skidders all had zf6 trannys, with a plate to block 6th gear. he said they were bullet proof in those things. (notice i said bullett proof an idiot can tear anything up. anything. nothing is idiot proof)
