In a couple of weeks from now I plan on removing the door panels on my '92 Ranger that has sticky electric door locks with electric windows have been wobbling in their tracks on the up and down cycle for quite a while now, and I don't want to wait until they completely crap out on me on the coldest night of the winter this year.
Seems like I've heard of repair kits for the window lift tracks and all and I was wondering if an item like that can be obtained in the aftermarket or would I need to go to Ford to get it?
Also, does anyone have an illustration they can post to show the door panel removal/install procedure. I tried removing the driver's side door panel several years ago and after removing the handle and arm rest, I couldn't seem to go any further because of the electric window/lock control panel that is mounted on the door. Is there a secret to getting that thing off?
If its like every other Ford door panel I've seen, you will need a 'push pin removal tool', which looks like a narrow spatula with a notch in it. You shove that behind the panel and pry out the push pins. There are typically 10-15 of them around the outside of the panel. I got one of the tools at Checkers, but I expect all the car parts places have them...
if its like the 94 later, remove a screw on the arm rest maybe one by the door handle then also maybe one up on the pilar where the mirror is. Once all are out push up from the bottom until they clear the retainers and lift from the bottom. If you have electric controls you will either need to unplug them at the switch or maybe you can just set them back thru the hole in the panel. I know thats how the ones on a 97 work. I had manuals and the removal for both were as decribed above. the upper edge of the panel hold the top in at the window. As to repair kits everything on the stuff I put in were metal, no nylon blocks or anything, so if they are rattling you will probably need to replace the window channelsand will probably need to get from a wrecking yard. Dont know if there are any aftermarket available.
I just put electrics froma 97 into my 94, pretty straight foreward job. majking the wiring bundle was the hardest.
I have never managed to get a door panel off without breaking at least a couple of those push pins. Visit the dealer and buy a half dozen before you start the job.

Well smack me in the head with a dead carp! Thanks, Hank. I've been putting off replacing a bad window switch on the passenger side for fear of busting up the door panel. I always thought there was a trick to it, and now I know.
