2005 using oil

I have a 2005 Escape 4 cylinder. We bought it new and it has 30000 miles on it. The problem is that it burns about 1 quart of oil in between oil changes. It still has 6000 miles left on the warranty.

To me, this seems like something is very wrong. There are no oil spots under the car. Do you guys think the dealer ship will give me any issues if I take it in.. Will they cover this on the warranty? Why would it use the oil in the first place?

<O

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Yes, have the dealer check it before the warranty expires. There are a number of reasons for using oil however with a newer vehicle it's not good.

You don't specify the mileage between oil changes. If you are using 1 quart of oil every 3000 - 6000, miles any manufacturer will consider that an acceptable rate of oil consumption. Manufacturers usually don't consider oil consumption excessive until you get around 1500 miles or fewer per quart.

Thanks for the responses.

I change the oil every 3000-4000 miles. I was thinking any oil usage in a new car was bad.

Certainly modern cars use far less oil under normal circumstances than cars did 10 or 20 years past where a quart every 1000 - 2000 miles was the norm. That said, one quart every 3000 -4000 miles would not concern me and I will bet my favorite fishing lure that the dealer tells you the same thing. Never hurts to ask though.

I bought a new 2008 Escape XLT 4 cyl brand new and took a trip to Florida, 1040 miles one way and used 1 quart there and 1 quart back. I think this is excessive even though it is not broke in. Im taking it into Ford and I'm wondering what they will have to say. I have 3500 miles on the vehicle and have used 2 quarts of oil, no leaks or smoke, however, on the very end of the tail pipe about 1/4 inch back, there is an oil residue. I was asking Ellwind if he was using recommended 5W20 because I have heard people switched to 10W30 and were complaining of oil consumption.

ad5an with 3500 miles on it it is possible for that engine to use alittle oil. After 6-7000 miles it should be broken in and the oil use should stop. After that if it continues to use that oil per1 quart at 1000 miles you have a problem that Ford should take care of.

The Wife's '05 4cyl with 25K uses no oil (2K change intervals) but it sure turns it dark in color, that is, way before my '05 F150 does......

I have heard of dealers saying that one quart oil use between changes is normal yet that doesn't explain why most DON'T burn oil between oil changes. In fact, of the 20 or so new Fords I have purchased, I have never had one use oil - some with over 100k on them.

I change the oil in my F250 over 1500-2000 miles some years. Of course, I may only put 2000 miles on it in a year.

If him changing his oil at 2k costs you a dime a gallon, then me driving a hybrid and burning lots less gas is probably saving you a quarter a gallon. You're welcome.

basically you won't get any warranty coverage unless you are approaching one quart oil consumption per 1000 miles, this is pretty much a standard in the auto industry. One quart between oil changes is certainly acceptable, why it uses oil while others don't is the million dollar question, but the dealer won't be able to do much unless the consumption is very excessive.

There are some products on the market that seem to help with oil consumption issues, one of the best is called auto-rx (not sure of the website, try to google it), and they work by cleaning combustion by-products from cylinder rings which can sieze rings in place, helping them to seal better. Also check out the foums at www.bobistheoilguy.com, lots of knowledgeable oil guys at that site that can answer your questions.

You might want to try some different oil brands as well, I find different oil brands get consumed at different rates, for some reason Mobil1 always seems to burn faster in my vehicles than other oils. I find non-synthetic oils don't burn off as quickly for some reason, might want to try out Castrol or Penz and see if you notice a difference.

Oh, I've had a few Fords that burned a bit of oil. When I sold my '88 Mustang V8 with 145,000 miles it was using a quart every 1500 - 2000 miles and my 2002 Tribute used no oil until passing 125,000 miles and now its using a quart every 3000 miles. I'm not worried about the Tribute - yet.
