I am looking for the painted gas cap for a 73 F-250 on the rear tank, and found this one on ebay.
Item # 140172109128
the seller claims it is for a mustang II, I would bid if it will interchange with our early dentsides. While we are on topic, what other ford vehicles can we find these gas caps on. Thanks for any help!

This Mustang gas cap was not used on F Series trucks.
D8OZ-9030-A .. Gas Cap ~ Fits: 1976/78 Mustang II; 1978/79 Econoline (with evap emission); 1976/79 Ranchero; 1973/79 Pinto except Squire Station Wagon (the Squire cap has a woodgrained decal, the only dif).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are several different 1973/76 Styleside gas caps. It depends on whether the truck has Evaporative Emission or not. Locking gas caps w/ or w/o Evap. Emission were also available.
D7UZ-9030-L .. Gas Cap ~ Used with Evap. Emission (Motorcraft FC-792). Primered steel with handle. Used on midship or aft axle tank. NOTE: Also fits front/rear tanks of 1975/77 Econolines with Evap. Emission.
D4TZ-9030-A .. Gas Cap ~ Used without Evap Emission (Motorcraft FC-98-A). Primered steel with handle. Used on midship or aft axle tank.
NOTE: Crew Cabs used a different gas cap then what's listed above.

OK, I found a NOS cap, but the guy strangely changed the PN to D8TZ-9030-A instead of D4TZ-9030-A in his reply. As ford part numbers go, do the 2 parts fit the same, with the D8 part having some minor revision of some sort, or is it a completely different part? Also, the cap should be primered, and not a universal color replacement, right? Thanks!
I just got the large cap for a project . Ended up it was for a farmtractor it works . I did not like the small ones for the step/ styleside. All I could find .

It may be the correct cap for your 1978, but it ain't correct for bigperm2's 1973.
D8TZ-9030-A does NOT replace D4TZ-9030-A.
D8TZ-9030-A .. Fuel Cap ~ Zinc Plated
It's the WRONGcap for your application!
This cap is not used for exposed fuel tank necks.
It's hidden behind the fuel doors used on later Stylesides.
Fits: 1977/78 Styleside Pickups without evaporative emission.
Use with midship or aft axle tank.

Bill what is obviously an 8 in that Part number I thought was a 6.
I tell ya.... the eyesite is getting worse.
I figured something was wrong, because you of all ppl know these trucks better than anyone, and would know that a D8TZ gas cap wouldn't look right on the earlier trucks. So that's why I was calmer than normal when I typed that hissy fit post!
Sorry to bother everyone with such a stupid question, but an old man told me today, that old harley gas caps would fit my 75 F250 with the incab non evap style tank.
I want to verify this before I drop 70 bucks for a cool looking harley cap I have eyeballed. It looks a lot like it will fit, but I know there are differences between the external ones, or at least I have been told that they changed sizes from year to year, so I thought, hey, the guys at the forums would know better than anyone.
Although the guy I found the cap from swears up and down that it will fit, I know thats because he has no intention giving me a refund if it doesn't.!!!
