Bad throttle response

Alright guys, i give. I am having a problem when I put my truck in gear and try to move. It sputters until it starts to roll and moves up in RMP. I have pulled the carb off and cleaned it, and changed my fuel filter. It has the Duraspark ignition, and the module is brand new. Timing is between between 10-12 degrees BTDC, just from eyeballing it. It does seem to be running pretty rich just from the strong exhaust smell and the black soot at the header collectors

Is the Vacuum Advance working ?

Are the idle mixture screws set properly ?

Is the linkage indexed correctly ?

I checked the advance by putting suction on the valve, and watching it move in the distributor. Im not sure how much vacuum the engine is giving though. The linkage is correct, and both screwa are set 1 and 1/4 turns from fully closed i guess. I set them to specs in the haynes manual for the year model truck.

1 1/4 turns is really only a starting point.

You need to adjust for the best/smoothest running of the engine

im sure how to adjust it as far as the engine running. So do you think that it is getting too much fuel at low RPMs, and mixture needs needs more air? If so, whats the best way to tune this

corrction.. im not sure how to adjust the mixture while the truck is running. whats a recommended process?

I typed it out in another thread, I'll have to go find it.
Get yourself a vacuum/fuel pump pressure gauge.

Equus sells one for about $12.00

How is the choke adjustment ?

EDIT:


Now the mixture screws:

They are only for idle mixture...... you know that right ?

Turn them into just about snug (be careful: turning them in too far will damage needle-seat area)

Now, back both of them out 1 1/2 turns

start engine and get engine to normal operating temp with choke fully off.

Set idle at 550 rpm

Turn ONE screw only in until engine starts to stumble

Now, while counting turns.. turn counter clockwise until engine starts to stumble.

Now divide the amounts of turns from stumble to stumble in HALF and turn the screw back in that amount.

Reset idle to 550 rpm and do the other idle mixture screw.

so would this affect trottle response from a dead start. I have a friend that is having the same problem with a brand new edlebrock 4 barrel with an electric feed.

There a few things that come into play
condition of the Distributor and ignition parts
vacuum leaks
linkage adjustments
condition of carburetor
quality of fuel
