When I remove the gas cap on my 64 the gas tank is always under vacuum. There is also a faint gas smell in the cab when the truck has been sitting for a day.
Sounds like to me the cap is not venting, hence creating a vacuum while fuel is being sent to the carb.
Next time you drive it open the cap to release the vacuum first, then drive it then when you park it open the cap to release the vacuum then see if you get any smell inside the cab. How much gas do you keep in the tank?
Try switching the gas cap with your 66 to see what happens. Nowadays you can't vent because of the emissions laws on newer vehicles.
In any event I hope you don't smoke!
