I need some info on a gas cap for my 1967 f100. In my Dennis Carpender mag it says the only correct gas cap for the 1967 is the: "Stainless Steel Gas Cap - Vented 1967-1972" And the only locking gas cap is for "1970-72". I know that the gas tanks are different from the 1967 and the 1970.
So my question is, does anyone know if I can use a non-vented locking gas cap on my 1967 or will I need to get a vented type?
The venting is needed so when the fuel pump draws fuel out of the tank the vent allows air to go into the tank to displace the fuel that was removed. Without it, the fuel pump will draw fuel until it can't pull anymore because the tank is under a vacuum.
The non-vented caps are for use with tanks that have evaporative contols. The tank venting takes place in the evap. system.
so as to prevent a vacuume in the gas tank, causing a hard to run down problem of fuel starvation. I recently came across this discovery first hand. I went to see if my fuel float was stuck in the tank (guage said 1/4 tank) and when I opened the cap, a large rush of air went into the tank and then the tank made a "klunk" as it re-expanded. so in answer to your querry, yes vented caps are necessary on certain tanks.

Hey guys, I went to Checker Auto and bought a gas cap today. It's a vented Slant 11491 in case anyone else needs to know. I took paint stripper and laccer thinner to take off the all the red paint. Then I took a scotch pad and scuffed in circular motons to give it the brushed alum look. Looks sweet, thanks for all the help. Here ya go:
Ranger240, that's a good idea. I'm not sure if I'll make any profit being as they are $15.99 each. But, if we see them pop up on eBay soon we'll know someone took the idea I'm proud, I think it's very custom. Just more custom fab going into my '67.
