My name is Chris. I am new to this forum, i think i belong thought. I have a Green 1994 F150xlt Reg Cab short box with a 302 200k and a
Green 1996 F250xlt Spr Cab Long box with a 351 116k
Both 4x4 with the E40D and i love them to death.
Anyways, what i would like help with, if you gentleman could be so kind.
When i am driving up hill, or even a small grade , and the truck shifts into overdrive. If i give it an gas and put it under strain just enought so it wont downshift. I get there terrible noise from, what sounds like, the front of the truck. Engine area. i cant decribe it, it sounds like a chatter, and squeal and a screach all at the same time. It started out doing every now and then. Now it will do in the bottom of the overdrive gear at about 45mph or if im in 4th it will do it at lower speeds, only when the RPMs are very low. Only when the engine has strain. As soon as i let off, or give it enough gas to shift down. It stops imediatly. I cant think of what would make that noise.
Does the sound seem like its comming from in the engine area? Sounds like engine pinging to me, which is caused from late timing or poor gas. Check the timing, of the engine. Be sure to pull out the spout plug when you do it.
If it helps to come up with any other possibilties or ideas, i just checked the belt and pulleys and i think my water pump pully is whopped out. would that make and effect if it was underload or not?
Chris
Alright, i ran one tank dry and filled it up with 93 octane. The noise stoped completly. If i switch back to the tank with 87 it will start to make that noise with in 30 seconds. I can beleive that the gas is bad, its been makeing the noise for a while and i fueled up many times. what could it be? Hmmmm i dont want to have to use the expensive gas all the time. haha maybe i will just have to do that. And thoughts?
The static timing should be 10 degrees, and checking that of course is a good idea.
The root problem is not the timing or octane though, the problem is the tranny isn't downshifting. Whenever you "dog" an engine - high load, low RPMs, it struggles and more often than not will ping.
So what I would be most concerned about is why is it not downshifting?
Vacuum leaks, modulator, check the fluid for level, color, and odor, pull codes even if the engine light isn't on, etc.
Welcome to the Ford boards Chris, and nice trucks.
I gotta' agree with what was said, the problem is the tranny should be downshifting before it starts to "chatter, and squeal and a screach all at the same time".
with your mileage, you're way ready for a tranny filter, modulator, and fluid changes to start off with then work from there. Vacuum, TPS, look for grime in the valve body while you're in there ...
