The rattle you get when lugging a Diesel (Strictly a NO NO) is the Diesel pulse slamming all the drive train slop back and forth destroying everything from motor to axles! You'll most likely hear it in the transmission. This does not mean there is a problem with the truck!
Either put the DMF back on or fill the transmission to the top and kiss your transmission goodbye in time. How long depends on how much you let it idle in neutral, though I must admit it'll likely out live any of us unless you live in a cold region that you never shut your truck off in and it spends horrendous idling hours.

I want to switch to a SMF cause my clutch and DMF are done for and can't afford a new DMF. what i understand from this quote is if i change to a smf i'm putting a death sentance on my tranny?
