I have an '86 E-150 van with a 300 and a 4 speed (really a 3 speed w/od) The lights dim and temp gauge goes wacko when I shift into 3rd,
even when the switch for the backup light is disconnected.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

Sounds like a funky ground to me.
Try hooking jumper cables from the neg. battery terminal to some place on the cab/fender/body. If problem goes away that's what it is.
sonds like funky ground to me as well
get a test light
with key out of the engine
disconnect the neg battery cable
and place the test light between the negitive cable
and the neg on the battery
if the light comes on then you have a short somewhere
good luck
The neg. cable should be going to the engine block, on most 300's, it goes to the lower starter bolt, makes a BIG difference in cranking going to the block rather than the frame. Then, there should be at least one body ground strap going from the block to the body. It probably works fine any other way, but, that's the way Ford did it.
