I have a 1991 F150 4x4, with a 5.0L engine. The check engine light came the other day, when I checked the codes it showed 33 which is the EGR valve and 29 which is the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Does anyone know what the VSS is and how I need to check, or where I can find any information on it.
The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) should be located on the back of your transmission on the top.
To remove it you need to unplug it, disconnect the speedometer cable from the speed sensor, remove the retaining bolt and remove the sensor, then remove the drive gear.
There probably is a way to check it...but I don't know about that.
Does your truck have cruise control? The VSS feeds the cruise first, then out of there to the engine computer. I'm not sure if this is the same between an 87 and your 91, but on my truck, there is a plug with a black wire and a green wire coming from the cruise control servo under the hood, that plugs into the wiring harness for the computer. I know Ford changed the way the wiring harnesses were routed in 89 or 90, so I'm not sure if this is still true for your truck or not. I'd at least look around the drivers side fender and see if anything is visually unplugged.
It does have cruise control, and I just had that fender well out before the check engine light came, I was replacing the parking brake cable. Thanks for the info
