I have a 1986 ford ranger with the 2.9 v6 5 speed, i have a problem when applying steady gas it revs up and down up and down but only at a certain amount of pressure on the pedal. Any help will be appreciated
A little more detail would help. Is it revving up and down when you're driving? How much throttle are you giving it when it does this? What engine speed? Does it happen when hot or cold? Fuel injection or carb?
1. Check for any trouble codes. An innova 3145 makes pulling codes VERY simple. Check out the reviews at amazon.com
2. If pulling the codes doesn't tell you what the problem is you need to VERY SIMPLY check the fuel pressure. Harbor Freight has the pressure gauge for about 20 bucks.
You want the one for fuel injection.
Still no joy? You need to test with a vacuum gauge. Harbor Freight might have those also.
On 1988 and newer Rangers you can use the CEL/check engine light to pull the codes, but the 1st Ranger that was equipped with a CEL was 1988.
What makes the innova 3145 so simple to use is that it pulls stores and displays the codes. No need to count flashes like on my actron scanner. Or you can pull the codes with an analog volt meter.
On my 87 the test connector hangs at the end of it's wires under the hood near the heater blower motor. Should be the same on your 86
Your post made me wonder how my 87 2.9 is doing vacuum wise. Took a drive to warm it up & put the gauge on it. Still pulling a nice steady 20 inches. Not to shabby for 240,000 miles. It's not easy to kill these old Rangers.
