Just cause its recommended doesn't mean its the only things that works. If' everyone only put recommended parts it would be kinda boring now wouldn't it. NO mods, no different looks think about hiow much stuff isn't factory recommended on your truck now. kinda makes tranny fluid in the ps not seem as big of a deal.
Ain't no downfall to putting ATF in your power steering, it's common practice. If it'll save you a few bucks and trip to the parts store, go for it brother.

i am not talking about every part, mod or addition.
just power steering fluid and using what ford recommends is not that expensive in this case.
from what i understand, it isn't a big deal. just my personal opinion that for a few bucks, y not get the right stuff. even if it's the same liquid but in a different bottle, i'd feel better about it. personal preference
The owners manual on my 85 (I realize you asked about ane 88) says to use mercon/dexronII. I have heard that if you use ATF after someone had used PS fluid, you can sometimes end up with seal problems.
A trick I have seen work for a noisy pump (I did it on a Chevy that had been run dry for a few minutes), is to put about a cap full of Prolong engine treatment in it (even though it says on the cap "for engine only").

It's not the money, it's just that I really don't need one more bottle of fluid on my shelf to keep track of. ATF is easier to find, cheaper, and combines 2 uses into one. They would have to pay ME to get me to use PS fluid just for the inconvenience.
under high pressure, ATF is supposed to lose it's lubricity (applied clutches and bands) and have very high friction. normal hydraulic fluid, you don't really want that.
