I had a leaky power steering hose on my other truck. I put transmission fluid in there, even hydraulic fluid meant for the excavator at work. I don't think it hurt it any. In a pinch, better transmission fluid than nothing at all.
I will say this - I have used Dexron ATF in every PS pump in every vehicle I have ever owned, and I have never had a pump failure. In my entire 30 years of vehicle ownership, I have only replaced one PS pump, and that was for a leaking case seal. Exactly what evils is the so-called PS fluid supposed to remedy if not the noise of a Ford pump?

Use only a fluid that meets Ford specification ESW-M2C33-F such as Motorcraft Type F Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid or an equivilent type F fluid which displays a Ford registration number (2P- followed by six numerals)
Yep, Its just that I have a few Qts of dextron on the shelf, and the PS pump was a little low...I used it before on vehicles from the past...
I figured it would be cheaper to use what I allready have instead of going down to Autozone and by something else..
I noticed the whine this month, seems to come out every October for some reason,-weather change?..mabey, -Haunted?-yea, definately.
--What would happen anyway? -I mean if I use the trannyfluid? that stuff holds up to heat prettygood, and its like hydraulic fluid? whats the downfall??
