What do you guys use for power steering fluid? Transmission fluid or power steering fluid? I changed my steering gear, changed hoses and drained most of the old fluid out. The old fluid was pink but it never registered that it was transmission fluid. After filling the system with power steering fluid I noticed that the back of the pwr steering pump dipstick said "use transmission fluid". I seem to remember them being interchangeable.
I own a car with an FMX transmission that also has power steering. On the P/S dipstick it says to use transmission fluid, which for that car would be Type F. My Bump has a power steering pump from a '76 F-100. The dipstick for that pump says "use approved fluid", whatever that means. Both pumps are Ford pumps. I've been using Type F.
Back in the days GOD and Henry Ford's company created the Bump, all Ford products used type F in both the p/s and automatic trannys. It wasn't untill the 1977 model year Ford started using Dexron in some C6's. That year a person had to read the dipstick to add the correct fluid. I was told back then Ford changed to Dexron to soften the shifts. Type F is a little bit more acidic.
