Power Steering Fluid

I have a F-150, 2001, 4.6L truck. My owners manual states to use Mercon ATF fluid for the power steering. I went to a Ford parts house to buy the power steering fluid for the above and they sold me power steering fluid for type F applications and said that this was the correct type of fluid.

Is this correct? Are these two type of fluids interchangeable?

I am useing mercon dexton synthetic mobil 1 ATF in mine. I trust the manual more than the parts guy.

the type of fluid used in the steering is not critical due to the dseign of the system. it is not advisable to mix fluids in any system. i would choose MERCON, MERCON V, TYPE F, etc, and stick with that. Adding two of the above together is not critical, but shoudl not effect teh steering in a bad way. it is more important that it is clean and full, then what type of fluiid is used.
