I've never had any trouble with the recommended ATF. Some prefer a synthetic. Royal Purple is a name that gets tossed around a lot.

Mobil 1 Syn ATF is what i've put in the last three times. I've even tortured it to 235* without an issue.

The manual tranmissions in these trucks use ATF? Seems like that would be too thin for a manual.

You would think so but they've been doing this for several years. It actually holds up well.

Do you guys know of the new '08 trucks have the same manual trans in them and call for the same fluid? I've got a friend that owns one and wants to change his fluid, but the owner's manual only states Motorcraft Manual Transmission Fluid. Is this just rebadged ATF? Seems it would be easier for them to just spec ATF in the manual.

My 02 manual uses ATF. The 08 specs:
Manual transmission fluid
5.8 quarts (5.5L) Motorcraft Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid
Ford part number : XT-M5-QM / WSS-M2C200–C

What the difference is, I don't know.

Yep -- my '84 Mustang's T5 had ATF in it. I converted to 75W-90 syn gear oil, then broke it. Twice. It wasn't the oil's fault though. I was racing it both times --2nd gear in those things were very fragile. That's why I swapped it to a C6 with the bored 351W...

No breaking that one...

EDIT: What the heck is "Full-Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid"???

Joe
