With just a drain and the replacement of the inline filter, it is about 8 qts.

On the 6.0 the internal tranny filter doesn't do much but the external one under the cooler in the front end near the passenger tire wheel well does.
If you change that and drain the pan (it has a drain bolt) your looking at about 8 or so quarts.
It takes mercon sp only available from Ford.
Try to drain the fluid when it is hot and up to temp.

External filter = approx. 1 qt.
Internal filter = approx. 7 to 8 qts.
Have never done flush but have read approx. 22 qts.
Only use Mercon SP

Total fluid change is 17.5 quarts. Here is the link to the write up in the Tech folder on how to flush the transmission yourself.

I am getting ready to do the same thing. The little external filter looks like it might hold a pint.. Also, I have not been able to accurately determine which filter I actually use. My dealer says it depends on the vin (I have a 2006 F250), but all of the parts look-up say F-145 or equiv. Yesterday they gave me a quote of $80 for a filter after asking my vin and today a quote of $30 with no vin necessary. I don't have much confidence in this dealer so think I will get a wix, motorcraft or somebody elses..I have to buy my fluid at the dealer, but not my filter..Oh..The service manager says they change the filter with their $199 flush, but since they don't stock any, I doubt it. I asked about that and was told that when they need them they get them from another dealer...No confidence again.!!!! I am going to get a filter, 8 qts of fluid and do it myself!! Any ideas?? Thanks, Bob <><

Bob,

Here is a link to purchase fluid and filters online, and if you spend $150 the shipping is free.

The external filter part # is motorcraft FT-145 $19.99 at auto parts store. Also Wix parts #57702. It takes a 22mm socket and when I did it last Thursday less than 4 oz leaked out into a jug I had ready to catch the overflow. Just put new filter in and screwed it back on.
