Tranny fluid type?

LAST EDITED ON 29-May-01 AT 10:07 PM (EST)[p]If you have the stock dipstick that should tell you. More than likely it is type F. I think you can run dexron in it though. But you can't run type F in a tranny that requires dexron. Don't take my word for it though, I'm only human. See what your dipstick says first.

People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

a stock C6 is supposed to use DexronIII/Mercon....aftermarkets (TCI, B&M) recommend Type F

Tranny fluid type?

Right on CJ the difference there is II or III. Type F was used in most older C6s, and to be sure the dip stick is the clue.

Tranny fluid type?

After my C6 rebuild and new TC, my transmission guy said to run D/M because it is a much more technologically advanced oil than the old Type F. Plus D/M is cheaper.

Tranny fluid type?

Otto - yeah, I just bought 16 quarts of Formula Shell Type F tranny fluid. $1.39 +tax per quart. It says on the back that Type F fluids are typically recommended for Ford automatic transmissions built prior to the 1977 model year as well as many 1977 through 1980 models.

By the way, does anybody know what the bolts for the tranny filter are torqued to on a C6? It doesn't say in my manuals.

Thanks, John.

I had to take a second look at the number because I thought it was the part number also, but then I flipped it over and found the real part number. I think it's the Ford specification number for the recommended fluid because it says that the warranty requires it or something close to that(the stick is kinda rusty). Usually I wouldn't be so picky about such things but I'm replacing all of the fluid not just adding alittle. Also, the trans will have to perform it's best because I just put in a built 351 and I don't want to have to pull it out because I burned up the tranny with some generic fluid.

Ford used a "cinterd iron" clutch material in their transmissions in the early days (I don't know the exact cut off year, but 77 sounds about right). The early trans's used type F which did not have dexron additives (a very slippery additive), as the rion clutches were much more slippery than the organic/metalic clutches of other manufacturers. If the transmission has benn rebuilt in the last 20 years or so, it will have organic clutches, (as the iron units were discontinued),which require dexron type fluid. otherwise stick to the type F. Type F will no longer be produced in the next year or two. So if you have an older, un-rebuilt trans, stock up now.

Well I went and bought a couple gallons of DexronIII/Mercon fluid, hope it works. Although the brand of oil I bought does not say that it is approved for use in tranny's that require M2C138 CJ. I looked at a couple of other brands of the same type and they were approved, so it should work.

Also, I kinda thought that the Type F was being discontinued because at the two parts stores I go to don't have it anymore.
