I have a 1989 F250 5.8 auto that I have used to pull a 30" fifth-wheel travel trailer for 10 years. Last week after a 60 mile trip, some of which was setting in a traffic jam, when I put it in reverse to back the trailer into my driveway the transmission lost all of the fluid out of the front of the transmission. I refilled it and it has not leaked again but I have not had the trailer connected. What happened and is it likely that it will do it again under the load of the trailer.
Hi It sounds like you tranny had over heated, and blew the
fluid out of the pump at the torque converter seal.
I've seen this happen to a few trucks that I know of,
while plowing snow.
How long after the traffic jam was it?
What gear ratio do you have ?
How many miles on it?
The trucks with the same symptoms had a 5.8 and a 460 with c-6's
and 3.55 rear ratios .
After cooling and added fluid they were fine till over loaded
with a a sander filled with sand a 9" plow and pushing snow!
My truck is a 88 F-350 single 4x4 5.8 C-6 4.10 posi
Plow Tow Rig with 145,000 on the original trans
I haul a car trailer ,up to a 27 Ft boat
and plow with a 8 1/2 plow commercialy for 12 hrs at a clip with NO problems.
I service the trans regulary to keep the fluid in good shape.
hope this helps , but see what a trans shop has to say.
Good Luck
