I was curious as to whether or not it is possible to tell if connecting rods are for a 360 or a 390 by their part number. I had a set of 360 rods that were #C6AE. I also have a set of rods that have the #C3AE and would like to know what they are for.
360 rods look like they are the same thickness from the small end to the big end, 390 rods seem to spread a lot more going from the small end to the big end, once you see the difference you'll never confuse them again. 360 rods look a lot smaller and weaker than the 390ci+'s
Phaffy, if I had my book handy I'd look up the numbers for you,but I don't know where my book is. However you can tell the 390 rods from the 352/360 rods just from looking. All of the long (6.54) 352/360 rods I have seen have a section of the beam at top, just under the pin, where it is narrower than the part that holds the pin. All of the short (6.488)390/410/428 rods that I've seen have a beefier beam under the pin area. Thats how I've always sorted them out. DF
Upon further investigation of the "C3AE" set, I found that the C3AE had no numbers following it. But, another rod in the set had what appeared to be a "C1AE" followed with the letter "A" beneath it. I don't know if this is just a mismatched set? The rods are still in the engine which was pulled from my truck and is laying on the garage floor which makes it difficult to retrieve numbers from the rods.
The C1AE-A are supposed to be 330-360 rods. It could be since my book doesn't show the C3AE rods without a dash letter after it it may be that they are just 360 rods. Either way 360 rods are okay for a stock or mild build up but are not meant for high performance usage. A 360 using 390 rods with custom pistons would be a cool buildup though. The sacrifice in rod length would be made up for in high revving power.

I'm with the Doctor on this one. You may have been lied to and you could have a 390. A 360 rod looks almost the same thickness the whole way down the I-beam. The I beam on a 390 rod gets wider pretty much the whole way down. There is no mistaking them. I tried to include a pic but it probably won't work.
