I am looking into having my heads rebuilt with hardened exaust valve seats the valves ground new guides valve seals and heavier springs for about $350. It includes having the heads magnafluxed and checked out for any cracks or anything. Is there anything else I should have done and is this a good price? Thanks. Eric
I'd fine out what the price increase would be for the 428 CJ valves which are 1.65 inches in diameter compared to the stock 1.56 inches. The extra diameter helps low end power and few things to that.
The reman 390 I bought had the extra cost "propane" heads, which were supposed to be stellite. Maybe they are, but when I had the valve covers off I saw that the valve stems are not all the same length, and various parts were not all the same. Any future work will be done at a shop that does high quality work, and I suggest that you think likewise.
Eric
elsmith,
I got a quote from one local shop to put hardened seats in a set of 64 T-bird heads for $400. A closer racing machine shop
quoted me around $700 for stainless valves, hardened seats, bronze guides and resufacing the heads .While I would have to supply springs and retainers for the $700 job I've used this source before and know they do good work.Shop around before you spend your money sometimes the more work you have a shop do the better the price break.By all means if you are getting heads reworked go with the larger exhaust valves.
For what it's worth, the shops around here (Memphis) have been quoting me around $150-175 for a basic valve job, plus $10/cylinder for installing hardened valve seats.
I can get a 3 angle valve job for $125 and the hardened seats are $8 a seat at one shop. another is $10 a seat and $230 to have them magnaflux, clean, strip, do all the guide work, new valve seals and grind the valves. Eric
