EGR Valve question

I'm not throwing codes or anything but like to stay ahead on maintenance on my vehicle. I've had the 04 6 L about a year now and have thought I should service or replace the EGR valve. A new valve sounded better in my head but they are $200. Is this another piece of hardware which should remain a Motorcraft only part or are there acceptable aftermarket parts?

I would stay w/ Motorcraft on it, but I probably wouldn't replace it if there was no indication of a problem.

Is cleaning a good option with a new o ring kit?

Wouldn't hurt to pull and inspect ... and clean if needed. I used to do that each year and then got lazy. Mine has always been oily and also oily in the intake manifold - even w/ the ccv filter. The EGR valve will come out a little easier if removed when hot (but they can be pretty hot, so wear gloves).

Just be careful in cleaning. Use Carb cleaner to clean the gunk off (not brake cleaner) and don't get the cleaner into the solenoid.

Most people fill a cup w/ carb cleaner and suspend the bottom part of the valve in the liquid (keeping the liquid level just below the solenoid body). Then brush the junk away and rinse. Afterwards, make sure the valve moves up and down and the spring return feels fairly strong.

Yes it is. Like Mark said use carb cleaner and keep the valve in the upright (as installed position) while cleaning, but they polish up nicely. There's a good thread in the teach folder about how to get it out without jacking up the ears on the valve; it's a straight forward 1 hour job for you take your time and really get it clean.
