A friend has a 2000 f150 w/ the 4.2 6cyl. 2x. He got codes po171,and po174. Which i know is lean banks 1 and 2. He wants to change the o2 sens. . I don't think thats the route he needs to take, only cause I thought it seems that it would have a rich code too if it was an o2 sens.. So I was wondering if anyone had these 2 codes as a combo and what to trouble shoot first, I'd be greatly appreciative.
Air leaks, cracked/disconnected vacuum lines, any thing that would be letting air into the intake after the MAF sensor or it could be a dirty MAF sensor.
ok just to throw a wrench in...he just said that a week ago it over heated...it was low on fluids. But it hasn't over heated since and hasen't lost any fluid since either. Would i still check the same stuff. There doesn't seem to be any water in the oil. Would there not be a maf code if it was out of range?

Reason: add to question
No, if the MAF is dirty, it's not reading correctly. It will be getting more air then it thinks it is and therefore putting less fuel into the cylinders(giving it a lean code). Does he have an aftermarket oiled air filter? sometimes people over oil them and it gets onto the MAF.... Also as stated check the PCV valve hose for cracks. If you spray brake cleaner around the top of the engine and listen for idle changes, you can pinpoint leaks. Also listen for exhause leaks. leaks at the manifold can cause O2 to be sucked into the exhaust giving a lean code(but you would need one on both banks).
just to update everyone who helped. It was the pcv. When i went to touch it, my finger went right through it. I'm surprised it even was still together. Thank ya'll for the help, it's much appriciated.
