Identify Block in F100

Hi all,
I just recently got my heads identified, and now I am wondering about my block. The guy I bought it from said it's a 360, but everytime I order parts for it they tell me Ford doesn't make a 360. I don't have the casting number yet, can someone tell me where to find it so I can post it here and maybe one of you guys can help me identify it? The only background I have about the Truck (1975 F100 2WD) is that it's a 360 bored .030 over, running heads off a 390. The head casting numbers are:

D2TE-AA
C8AE-H

Thanks again!

JP

The parts guy is uninformed. Look for a number on the side of the block behind the alternator. Also, look for a number where the oil filter adapter bolts to the block. It’s on the bottom of the block right where it meets the adapter.

What is with the mismatched heads on everybodies motors? Ford did make a 360 and it was pretty popular in trucks. If it is not the original motor there is only one way to tell because the casting numbers are exactly the same. Put the number 1 cylinder at exactly top dead center and stick a wire down into the spark plug hole then mark it. Next put it in the number 4 spark plug hole and mark it. Measure the distance between the marks. If it is 3 1/2 inches you have a 360 and if it is 3 3/4 inches you have a 390.

That parts guy is a moron. He may never have heard of the 360, but there's no question that Ford made a ton of them from 1968-76. It doesn't really matter, however, because the 360 is externally identical to the 390. Any part that is listed as being for the 390 will fit and function just fine on a 360.

The only difference between the 360 and 390 is the rotating assembly -- crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons. Blocks, heads, intakes, gaskets, pumps, brackets and everything else are exactly the same.

Thanks man, I will definately give that a try but, ummmm how can I find my motor's TDC?? I guess it would entail lining up a mark on my harmonic balancer with something...

Uh, no. Just drop a dowel or wire or something into the #1 cylinder through the spark plug hole (make sure it's long enough that it doesn't drop all the way through -- 6 inches is more than enough). Then put a wrench on the crank pulley bolt and rotate the engine. Keep an eye on the dowel. It will rise as the piston rises, come to a stop, and start back down as you pass TDC. It helps to have someone else watch the dowel as you rotate the crank. When the dowel is at its highest point, that piston is at TDC.

I know this may sound dumb to you but...does it matter which way I rotate the engine?

Nope but if you try to go counterclockwise the crank bolt might loosen up. So I would go clockwise.

JP, take along a white 8" long piece of 14-2 house wire, just in case you find the dowel hard to work with. ;-)

ALl,
Man it was a bit nippy today out there, and I plumb forgot to check the stroke. I probably will have to go out there Tuesday or Wednesday to check it. I took a buncha pivtures of what I've been doing so far, here's the links:

http://paulbunyan.dyn.dhs.org/paul/021602/index.htm
http://paulbunyan.dyn.dhs.org/paul/021702/index.htm

I should be picking up those headers Tuesday morning and be putting them on Wednesday morning. Ill be sure to post some pics of how it goes, I should have took a picture of the clutch linkage i had to move to get the drivers side header off. I also plan on wrapping my headers in some insulation tape or some heat shield thing from JC Whitney my cousin claims worked for him. At any rate I will be sure to keep you guys informed...Thanks again

JP
