Joe and Kris, what do yall think of this method of draining, courtesy Pop a couple of years ago:
Crawl under your truck and look for the oil filter. To the rear of the aluminum filter adapter there are two plugs on the side of the block. The one closest to the adapter and closest to the pan rail is the crankcase inspection plug. That's not the one you want.

Now, a couple of inches farther up and back, there is another plug. It has a 1/4" square recess (on mine). Don't take it out until it's time to get wet! ;-)))

There's a corresponding one on the other side of the block which is a little harder to get to, but possible. It will look the same.

Let it drain then refill w/clean water and run till therm opens up. Drain it all out again, and fill w/new 50/50. Is this method overkill or is there an easier way?

Hopefully 8 gals will refill her completely.

That's what I was talking about -- that still leaves a little in the block, and a little more in the heater core. That said, if you fill with 50/50 after that, it'll be okay. I've heard of many others doing just that. Yes, it's a little under 50/50, but it's okay unless you're in the Arctic.

Technically, for the normal life of the green. Once you pour in the green, you use the same maintenance schedule as if you had all green. Since you're already switching to red, I'd hold out and get the coolant filter as well. After that, you shouldn't have to mess with the system for 300k (as long as the water pump holds). With the filter, the water pump life is extended quite a bit...
