I was at the local wally-world to pick up some rotella for the old 6.9. So-I know I was told that the truck calls for 10w30-but rotella came in 15w40, sae30, and synthetic, but I don't remember the weight. For those who have been watching the threads about my "oil pressure woes", you obviously know where I am at right now with this motor. Which one should I run? Is the synthetic any better?
As long as it meets CI-4 rating. Most oils are good but the weight is very important. Especially in this frigid weather. 10W30 is what is called for. I would look at another supplier for the Rotella oil. Wally world only carries what moves the best so look elsewhere.
reg oil is made from oilo from the ground and synthetic is a man-made fluid. Synthetic is more expensive but some people say you can extend oil changes but as for myself I wouldn't. Keep on the same change interval. As this is the only way some of the chemicals generated will be removed.
cool. thanks for the info. I have never taken stock in anything that says I can run longer intervals between oil changes. That just doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
I like the synthetics they seem to stay cleaner longer as far as engine oil goes. Filtration is the key. But to be honest maintenance is the real saver just do it. Oil is cheap insurance and if you keep your ride long enough and put a couple hundred thousand miles on it. The cost of a rebuild is far cheaper than a new truck. I had new trucks and decided I like to run and work on the old dogs. I change the oil on a regular basis Dave Sponaugle has it figured right out to the penny of what it costs him to run syn. I just like it when it is cold the engine spins like it was 70 degrees out. Less torture on the batteries and they get enough of that from plowing snow. So, I am sure it balances out in money one way or another.
I get my oil from a farm store here in kansas called Orscheln's.
Its called Mystik JT8 from Citgo. Its a synthetic blend 15-40 Severe duty oil.
Me and my father in law have been using it in our tractors and trucks for a couple years and I am sold on it. Even in the coldest weather, my tractor, my truck, and my flat bed F600 spin right over. When I change the oil, it isnt jet black, but more of a dirty brown. As for a filter on my IDI, I used the Mobil 1 extended performance MS-601 powerstroke filter. Motorcraft was 9.99, Mobil 1 was 9.99, I chose the Mobile 1 brand. My fuel filter is Wix, my air filter is a Wix as well. Just my 2 cents.
well my 2 cents is that my expirience with synthetics is that if the motor is not sealed up tight that oil will find a place to seep out where regular oil doesent tend to do so
This is the info I have been wanting to hear. So l can spin the motor over like it was warm outside? Why hasn't anyone told me sooner? My truck is not a big oil leaker, it just tends to mark it's spot every now and again. However, I do not want to help a leak, I got enough to deal with as it is. How is it as far as affecting oil pressure? at a guess, completely a guess, I would say oil pressure wouldn't be as good(?)-therefore maybe not such a good idea for a tired old motor like mine. Mine is of the extremely loud variety, there is no mistaking it for a gas motor, forget having a conversation anywhere near it if it's running. I would guess that it would make that great ol diesel clatter even louder? These are all guesses. Set me straight on these issues guys. That whole "turn over like it's 70 degrees outside" made me want to look closer at synthetic.
Bandit is right about the leaking, if your motor isnt selaed up good, synthetic will slippery slide its way right through any damaged seals. Mine doesnt leak at all, well except for needing new valve cover gaskets, which i am putting on next. It wont make your engine louder, or anything like that. The oil pressure I would think would improve, not degrade. Thats strange that yours is so loud, Mine isnt quite by anymeans, but I can talk when someone is nearby. ive ran synthetics for awhile and really havent noticed any extra leaks really, maybe its because when I see a leak, Im on it like flies on poop. LOL, I just switched my 06 Mustang over to mobil 1 full synthetic. I picked up 1-2mpg just by doing that.I used to average 19-20mpg, now I get 21-22 mpg. Except for possible leaks, there is really nothing negative about going to synthetic. If I can get another 10-20,000 miles out of the engine, Im there dude!

Davelong 667, I was hoping you would reply here. From a climate standpoint, We are close enough to compare the cold. How long did you say you've been running synthetics? Also is there anything else about the synthetics to keep in mind?
Ive been using synthetics for a couple of years. There must be something to it that is darn good because there has to be a reason that my 06 Mustang came from the factory OEM with full Syn differential oil, full Syn manaul tranny oil, and syn blend engine oil. You buy any new car and its bound to have Syn written all over it. But I do understand.... our IDI's are a far cry from new. But with a good sealed engine and good filtration, theres no reason why an old IDI can reap the benefits of Syn, just as most auto manufacturers are doing, going full syn! Im not sure about a GM product, they may scrimp there pennies and NOT put Syn, but I know for a fact Ford, toyota, Honda, and Nissan do. I also do not extend my oil change intervals simply because of syn oil, I change the oil as regular as conventional oil.... just the sound of that word "Conventional"....lol That tells you its a thing of the past. At my workplace we have modern CNC machines (which also use full syn oil) and then there are a few COVENTIONAL machines in the back collecting dust and awaiting there auction time...lol
I used syn oil in an old oil burner maverick, years ago. It ran better, got better mileage and the oil consumption dropped from 3qts a tank to 1. What's it hurt to try it and see? Hard to go wrong, there, I think.
